Daws and I planted seeds in some of the empty pots in mid April.  They are now growing like crazy (well some of them) – we are just waiting for the flowers to start sprouting.  I’m also including a photo of the front yard area in which we took out all the bricks last week and planted a ton of seed.  I’m anxiously awaiting that growth as well!! New flower beds

9 05 2010

For some crazy reason I didn’t get enough of all the hard work on the flower beds last year so this year it wasn’t enough to just do  some up keep on the work done last year instead I had to create more projects for myself.  I created a  new bed around our large tree in the backyard, extended the side bed next to the deck, planted 100 new bulbs & 20 new plants in all the flower beds and dug up all the crappy brick in around the front yard tree (previous owners had some and crappy job and I was sick of looking at it).

Here’s some of the areas we worked hard on for the past month or so…

Monbretia will be growing on both sides of the red flowers in the front.  Stv killed 3 of the plants with the hose yesterday and when I went to buy replacements I found some of the same kind but in purple and green.  Haven’t gotten a picture of the new look yet though.

Liatris and Dutch Iris will be growing under the window & across and Gladious just to the left of the window and at the end of the bed.

Lilies will be growing here in the front soon.  Roses are in the back and I planted some things in the pots to spruce it up until the lilies grow.

I planted 4 lilies here last year and they are spreading like crazy, I planted 4 news ones this year.  Hopefully next year it’ll be full of lilies!!!

New bed around tree.  I took 8 bags of topsoil and garden soil to fill it.  I planted 2 elephant ears and 4 of the pinkish plants (can’t recall the name).

I took all the bricks out, evened it out and layed town a ton of seed hoping it’ll grow some nice green grass.

More yard work

14 09 2009

In preparation for our upcoming housewarming party I was outside once again doing too much yardwork.  We bought a hedge saw so I cut the bushes down – all 22 of them.  Daws counted!  I layed down more mulch in two of the areas that were overgrown with weeds.  Mulch doesn’t kill weeds people – not in the least-doesn’t help one bit-even though right on the bag it claims it does – liars!  I bought 3 more bags of mulch – had one left over and Steve had to go by two more.  This time I layed it out much thicker – hoping it would work better.

We planted a couple small rose bushes and will probably add a third in front of the lamp.  The daffodils come up every year in the front so I’m not changing much there.

I cut the crap out of the bushes as you can see.  I had to- to make them look similar I had to cut the middle ones small then the one on the right looked dumb being so big next to the other bushes.  I bought a new planter and planted some mums – they are beautiful.

The back bushes won’t look the small thanks to area not being level.  But they look much better so I’m happy with that.

Fresh air is good

Being able to open both french doors is very nice!  Even though it was almost 80 degrees outside yesterday when I got home, inside it was 68 and it felt good!  It even felt chilly by 9:30.  I love the new screen doors!

I took some pictures this morning of the house.  Finally all the trees are in full bloom.  Except for some bare spots in the yard (thanks to some major weed spraying) it’s looking very green all around the house these days..and   I love it!

We had yet another window company come by to give us an estimate for the 3 bedrooms windows that need to be replaced.  Another 3K+ estimate.  Ugh!  I still can’t wrap my head around the cost.  I haven’t been able to justify it yet.  I need to keep telling myself we are talking about 5 windows total…even though it’s only 3 rooms.  But 3500 dollars is way more than I’d like to pay for windows.  Even with a lesser window (2 pane vs triple) with HDepot it’s still going to cost 2800.  Yes, sure, there is a tax credit but only up to 1500. Ugh!

Making it beautiful

11 05 2009

I want to buy more flowers.  I have had to resist the urge to buy more and more.  However after the last time I planted the roses and such it became much easier.  I decided I was too tired from all the work it took to plant and plant and plant some more.  So I figured I was done.

Yet I still keep going to the garden department at Home Depot (when we had to go there Sat. to get wood to get that darn back door screen up).  No, it’s still not up.  At home depot I managed to get out of there with no new flowers/plants.  I wanted one or two hanging plants since 2 of the ones I have don’t seem to be doing well.  I couldn’t find anything that looked good for the price.

That changed on Sunday when I went to a local nursery and found these beauties…

front of house

For only 6 dollars more than what HDepot was charging for much smaller plants I got these.  The purple is HUGE and so gorgeous.  The red looked fuller until I hung it up but I’m sure it’ll get much bigger.

The front of the house looks so good now.  It’s the neighbors fault…my obsession with adding new things weekly.  I think it looks good then one of the neighbors will add something and I’ll think it needs more.  I think I’m done though.  It’s a huge pain in the butt to water everything with the outside water issues that seem to have gotten worse.  I don’t need to refill the water pitcher 10 times every 3 days to water them all – 5-6 times enough!!

Weekends are for work…at least at our house

4 05 2009

I’d planned on spending this weekend having fun and relaxing, not working.  But as usual it (once again) didn’t happen that way.  Saturday we did manage to have some fun watching Wolverine and having a late lunch at Mongolian BBq.  We made a stop at Home Depot  before heading home to pick up the stuff to replace the light switches/covers.  After two months of trying to figure out what to do about the bathroom switch covers Steve finally had a light bulb moment and we found an answer.  We looked several places trying to find the right cover for the duel switch – fan and light.  Light was a flip switch and the light was an up and down lever dimmer switch.  We found nothing to replace the old ugly boring white cover.  Nothing had a flip switch on one side with a square hole on the other.  Finally Friday Steve suggested we replace the light switch with a different kind that would need a square cover – giving us two squares to cover – we knew we could find cover for that….even covers that match the rest of the house.  Steve spent an hour replacing the light switches (2) and the dimmer (he insisted we change out the dimmer to a more modern one – the other one annoyed him).

Here is the end result…

And while Steve was hard at work on the switches I was busy planting the roses I bought earlier in the week and the other flowers I bought Saturday to replace the tulips I previously had planted.  Here is what I accomplished…

If an hour and a half worth of work on Saturday wasn’t enough I spent at about 3-4 hours more on Sunday.  I planted some more plants I’d bought but hadn’t gotten around to planting (mostly because I wasn’t sure where to put them and if it was still alive).  I then layed more mulch and sprayed more weed killer around the front and back yard (still have the back back yard to do).  Daws helped with that.  I also planted a flower Daws gave me today for Mother’s Day, trimmed many trees and started cleaning out the final garden area I have yet to touch.

These plants are called Pink Pampas Grass (Hierba Pampas Rosado)  and they are supposed to look like this…

I doubt they’ll ever look that good but maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll at least look better than they currently do.  It’s now almost 8 pm on Sunday night and I’m totally wiped out.  If the yard work wasn’t enough to wear me out the laundry and cooking dinner did me in.  The cat is still laying around the deck – boy I wish I had his life!!!  Steve just left to hang up a flyer with a picture of the cat.  Hopefully someone claims him. Daws is getting way too attached.  Yes, I know he probably needs a pet.  But I need a ton of moo-la and I’m not getting that – we can’t get everything we want now can we???

More planting

26 04 2009

I finally planted the new flowers I bought last week.  I also dug up some of the daffodils and moved some of them to a different area.  I’ve pretty much decided to not do much else with the garden areas but maintain what we currently have.  With the exception of this garden area…

I want to plant a rose bush in the back part of this area.  It’s hard to tell in the picture above but this is one area I dug up some of the daffodils.  I moved some from the right side to the left side to help fill in the bareness of it.  I hope the daffodils don’t die but if they do I’ll just plant some in the fall for next year.  Here’s a better picture of what I did.  The moved one don’t look near as good but hopefully they’ll look better in a few weeks.  The other daffodils I moved last month are looking much better than they did when I first moved them.

Here’s some pics of the new flowers I planted.  I may also put a rose bush in the back of this area but probably not until next year.
